Karen's graphic: Stereoviews: the Falls in Depth.Return to the Stereoviews Index page.

Two men stand looking at the falls. It's winter; there's snow everywhere.

Some winter explorers. People still visit the Falls every day, all winter long. The text on this mount reads:

"New York City and Chicago 1247 Roscoe Street, Chicago, Ill." and "Greater New York Stereo Co. series of 1903 by E. M. Brown" and "1069 Min-ne-ha-ha Falls, in Winter, Minnesota."

I simply do not believe that this picture was taken in 1903. It's older than that. I don't think E. M. Brown took this picture, either.

A fence is barely visible through the trees.

We do finally see a thin and scraggly fence along the northside cliff top.

A man stands on the south side looking at the waterfall.

It can't be that cold a day, for all the new snow; he hasn't got his coat buttoned. One of urbancreek.com's loyal readers has suggested that perhaps this man is a soldier, maybe even a civil war soldier. His riding boots look sort of military, after all. Me, I'm not sure. I sort of doubt it.

A man stands on the ice in the creek bed, leaning way back to look up at the falls, which are partly frozen and partly falling.

I love the angle here, and the man leaning back to look up at the Falls.

A picture of the back, showing what might or might not be a date.

This cryptic pencil mark is on the back. Does it say, "3/7 -4"? March 7, 1904? Not likely.
